PracticeShadowing

Terms of use

Version 1, 18 October 2026. These terms apply when you use practiceshadowing.com and its app, and by using either you accept them. Who runs the service, and the law that applies, are at the end of this page.

Without an account

You can practise with the sample clips without an account.

Your account

  • You sign in with Google, or with a six-digit code sent to your email address.
  • An account is for one person. Keep your sign-in to yourself: anyone who can sign in as you can use your minutes.
  • Practice Shadowing is for adults.
  • We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms.

Free during launch

  • During the launch, Practice Shadowing is free.
  • An account gets 5 minutes a day for transcribing or scoring, plus 10 more minutes on the first day.
  • Practising, recording, comparing and finding a YouTube video's sentences use no minutes.
  • You can ask for more minutes from your profile. Asking does not guarantee more minutes.

Material you may use

  • Use only material you have the right to use: recordings you made yourself, material in the public domain, or material whose rights holder allows this use.
  • You are responsible for the material you add.
  • Your material stays on your device. When you ask for a transcript, only the minutes you chose are sent, and only the words come back.

YouTube

YouTube videos play in YouTube's own player, under YouTube's terms of service. Practice Shadowing downloads no video or sound from YouTube.

Podcasts

You can add a podcast only by its public feed link. Do not add a feed that needs a login or a private key.

Acceptable use

Do not:

  • use the service by automated means, such as scripts or bots;
  • try to get around the limits, for example with several accounts or by calling our servers directly;
  • add material you do not have the right to use;
  • disrupt the service, or use it to break the law or to harm anyone.

Scoring

A score shows the words that were heard in your recording, set against the sentence: matched, different, missed and extra, with the pace. Speech recognition can be wrong. It is not a grade of pronunciation or accent, and it is not a test result. We give no guarantee about scores.

The service as it is

Practice Shadowing is offered as it is, during a launch. We do not promise that it will always be available or free of errors. Material kept in your browser can be lost if the browser's data is cleared, so keep your own copy of any file that matters to you.

Changes during launch

During the launch the service may change. Features and the daily minutes can change or stop. These terms can change too; when they do, the version and date at the top change with them.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account from your profile at any time. That deletes your account, your sign-in records, your minutes and your practice counts. Material in your browser stays there until you delete it in the app or clear this site's data.

Who runs the service

Practice Shadowing is run by Andrew Williams. Write to contact@practiceshadowing.com.
